  • Furniture making

Essential Woodworking Tool Kits for Beginners

To help you get started on your woodworking journey, let’s dive into the basic tools every beginner should have.

DEWALT 20V MAX Combo Kit, Compact 6-Tool (DCK620D2)

The Woodstock 5-piece woodworking kit is a classical collection of hand tools: No.4 hand plane, carpenter’s corner, marking gauges, and a trimming planer.

Powered tools such as drills, sanders, and jig saws are significantly easier to use. That’s why I highly recommend having a power tool kit to meet these needs.

Japanese woodworking tool kits

Japanese woodworking tools are famous for their special quality and design. Like many things in Japan are made the other way around, Japanese saws and hand planes are built to be pulled rather than pushed. This is very handy in certain situations.

The saw

A saw is like a painter’s brush; it is your go-to tool for making cuts and shaping wood. You’ll need different types of hand saws, such as cross cut or rip cut saws. To start off it’s good to have the universal type of saw teeth.

The hammer

You’ll need a hammer for driving nails into wood and assembling projects together. A wood mallet is used to thump on a chisel when cutting mortises.

Choose a hammer that feels comfortable in your hand and has some weight to it.

The chisel

A chisel allows you to carve out intricate designs or shapes from your piece of wood with precision and accuracy. It takes some time to learn how to use them effectively but once you do; they become indispensable in your woodworking toolkit.

The measuring tape, combination square or carpenter’s corner

The measure tape may seem insignificant compared to others on this list but still you need it for big measurements. I personally prefer a combination square with a water level. It has a lot of functionality.

You’ll need to do measuring and square checks frequently throughout any project; so invest in a tool that has clear markings and locks securely after taking measurements.

Power Tools for Woodworking

Balance between speed and precision

Let’s face it, using hand tools can be incredibly time-consuming and exhausting. If you’re a beginner, you might find yourself struggling to make cuts or create intricate designs by hand. This is where power tools come in handy.

In fact, you should combine hand tools with power tools. Drilling a hole or cutting a straight cut is much easier with a power drill or saw.

A secret of advanced woodworkers – is a lot of machinery and custom jigs that don’t allow any unnecessary cut or curve.

Let’s observe some good power tool kits on the market.

Dewalt Power Tool Kits

With the DEWALT, you can effortlessly expand your tool collection while keeping everything powered up. One of the best value-for-money woodworking kits out there.

Specialty Tools for Woodworking

While the basic tools are essential, some specialty tools can help you reach accuracy and add flavour in a particular woodworking project.

Many jigs can be crafted in-house using plywood and glue, offering a cost-effective solution. However, there are also factory-made exemplars that have proven invaluable to numerous woodworkers.

Dovetail Jigs and Pocket Hole Jigs

Dovetail joints are an essential part of many woodworking projects, but they can be challenging for beginners. That’s where dovetail jigs come in handy.

These jigs make it easy to create perfectly spaced and angled dovetails every time. With a dovetail jig in hand, you can tackle even the most complex joinery tasks with ease.

These jigs come in many sizes and styles, so be sure to choose one that fits your needs and experience level. Some models may require specific router bits or other accessories, so be sure to read the instructions carefully before use.

Lathes

If you’re looking for a way to create intricate shapes and designs from wood, then a lathe may be just what you need. Lathes allow you to turn wood on its axis while cutting it with various cutting implements such as chisels or gouges.

This process creates symmetrical shapes such as bowls or spindles. While lathes may seem intimidating at first glance, they’re actually quite easy to use once you get the hang of them.

Plan your projects so that you first do something simple and buy only a few tools to start with. These would probably be some hand tool and some power tools like a drill and a saw.

Expand your assortment of tools based on the scope of your projects and explore different techniques. This approach will help you identify the woodworking style that suits you best and determine which tools are worth upgrading or letting go. By doing so, you can refine your craftsmanship and elevate your woodworking prowess.

Some power tools work like Lego constructor: once you’re happy with the brand you can expand the collection of devices which can have uniform power charging and other elements.

Invest in something special: a quality chisel set or a wood lathe to get the taste of how easy and satisfying it could get.
